Subsidy for asset creation for intellectual property
The Subsidy for Asset Creation for Intellectual Property is a scheme run by the Government of Tamil Nadu, under the MSME/Industries Department and included in the state’s MSME Policy Guidelines. It was launched to encourage micro, small and medium manufacturing enterprises in Tamil Nadu to register intellectual property assets namely patents, trademarks, or geographical indications (GIs) by providing financial assistance (subsidy) towards the registration cost. Your enterprise can benefit from this scheme by reducing the cost of securing IP rights, thereby strengthening your competitive position and reducing risk of imitation.
Key Features
- Subsidy on cost of Patent Registration: Under the scheme, manufacturing MSMEs in Tamil Nadu can claim reimbursement/subsidy for the cost paid for filing a patent application (in India or abroad), including the first‐time maintenance fee of the granted patent. Content Management System (CMS) TN This helps reduce the financial burden of obtaining patents, encouraging innovation.
- Subsidy on cost of Trademark / Geographical Indication (GI) Registration: The scheme also covers the cost of registering trademarks or GIs (in India or abroad). MSMEs can get part of the cost of filing and initial maintenance reimbursed. Content Management System (CMS) TN This makes it more affordable to protect brand names, product names, or regional specialities under GI.
- Defined quantum of assistance (percentage + maximum): For patents: 75% subsidy on the cost of filing & first‐time maintenance fee, subject to a maximum of ₹3 lakh per patent registered. CMS TN For trademarks/GIs: 50% subsidy on the cost of filing & first maintenance, subject to a maximum of ₹25,000 per registration. Content Management System (CMS) TN This gives you clarity on how much support you can expect.
- Eligible for new and existing manufacturing MSMEs in Tamil Nadu: The scheme applies to all new and existing micro, small and medium manufacturing enterprises in Tamil Nadu (for patents) and similarly for trademarks/GIs. Content Management System (CMS) TN So even if your enterprise is already operating, you can apply for the subsidy.
- Application time limit within 6 months of registration: The application (for subsidy) must be filed within six months from the date of obtaining the patent/trademark/GI registration. Content Management System (CMS) TN So you must act promptly after getting your registration certificate to avail this benefit.
