MSME Competitive (LEAN) Scheme
The MSME Competitive (Lean) Scheme is a Government of India initiative implemented under the MSME Champions Scheme, led by the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MoMSME). Its purpose is to enhance the productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness of MSMEs by enabling them to adopt Lean tools and techniques for reducing waste in manufacturing and improving operations. The scheme supports MSMEs in optimizing processes like inventory, space, energy, and production while increasing product quality, export potential, productivity, and innovation. The financial provisions and benefits offered under these guidelines are valid up to March 31, 2026.
Current Status of the Scheme
As of December 2025, the MSME Competitive (LEAN) Scheme dashboard shows that 58,432 MSMEs have registered, 58,181 units have taken the Lean pledge, 17,522 MSMEs have achieved Basic certification, 4,320 have registered for the Intermediate level, and 203 consultants are registered to support Lean implementation across India.
Key Features
- Lean Scheme Levels: MSMEs can undergo a 3-tier certification journey:
- Basic Level – Introductory awareness through e-learning.
- Intermediate Level – Application of Lean tools with handholding.
- Advanced Level – Deep Lean implementation with extended engagement.
- Lean Pledge Requirement: Every MSME must first take a Lean Pledge, signaling commitment to Lean principles before applying for implementation support.
- Group of Enterprises (GoE): For Intermediate and Advanced stages, MSMEs must form a Group of Enterprises (GoE) of 4–10 units in similar or contiguous production areas.
- Handholding & Lean Consultants: Designated Lean Manufacturing Consultants (LMCs) support MSMEs in applying Lean tools. Consultants are empanelled and selected with transparent criteria.
- Digital Platform & E-Certificate: The scheme uses an e-enabled platform for registration, assessment, and issuance of certificates that are valid for 3 years.
- Nation-wide Awareness & Training: Stakeholder training and awareness programs are conducted to help MSMEs understand and implement Lean practices.
